Nuclear plants necessitate frequent outages for routine maintenance operations. Given the carbon-free nature of nuclear energy, any alternative to these plants during such outages would contribute to air pollution. Moreover, these outages incur significant costs. Sponsored by TVA, we are developing a laser-powered, robotic technology that can efficiently de-ice certain condensers within the plants to shorten the scheduled outage. This research and development effort promises broad societal benefits, including improved air quality and reduced electricity costs.
